Because they can. This film gives They've got scads of accolades and a mountain of great films under their belts. Streep is commonly referred to as the greatest living actress, while Jones is known for being a tough guy's tough guy with a little humour on the side. So why are these two greats T Nicholas Friesen ommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep are two names syn- onymous with great acting. and ludicrous events — includ- ing the two of them trying to lay together with their arms around each other, have a romantic even- ing out and Streep attempting to give Jones a blowie in a movie theatre. She doesn't go full front- al like Diane Keaton did in Some- thing's Gotta Give, but it's just as daring. Throughout the film, she's just as effortless as always, mak- ing this performance as important as any of her others. The movie is your usual Holly- used only for procreation—a stig- ma Feld attempts to break them free of. What ensues is a series of sweet www.uptownmag.com Tommy Lee Jones, Meryl Streep and Steve Carrell in Hope Springs. tine, which involves Arnold com- ing home from work and falling asleep watching shows about golf, then sleeping in a separate bedroom. Though Arnold feels that there's nothing wrong with this, he is eventually coerced into million old married couples stuck in a rut. Cue every sitcom laugh track ever recorded. Kay grows tired of their rou- attending an intensive week-long therapy workshop with Dr. Feld (Steve Carrell in a so-monotone- it's-over-the-top performance). Stuck in a small town with few sights to see and only each other to talk to, Arnold and Kay bounce back and forth between love, spite and embarrassment throughout their trip. Kay gets awkward when Dr. Feld asks them to talk about their sex life — especially since it's been six years since they've had one. Arnold barely wants to touch her, let alone smooch her. Kay starts out thinking it's all Arnold's fault but quickly realizes she has a lot of her own issues to work through, too. This couple is of the generation that believes sex should stay in the bedroom and be and few, Hope Springs isn't really a comedy. It's a spotlight on mar- riage and a reminder that it's never too late to change. For more info see our movie list- ings below. Deadline for listings submissions is Tuesday at 4pm.
